Faience and Rural Ceramics

Faience tableware, which experienced a heyday in the 18th century, is closely related to porcelain. The Strasbourg Hannong factories are a particularly interesting example, which produced very high-quality tableware with superb painting in large quantities. Countless Strasbourg faiences found their way to Switzerland as imported products. But other manufacturers also exported to the Old Swiss Confederation. As early as the late 19th century, these original “everyday objects of utility” became collectors’ items. The flourishing antique trade later brought other excellent products to our country. It was a similar story with rural pottery. Rural ceramics from the Bernese region are famous, such as those from Langnau or Thun. Many households are furnished with the most beautiful ceramics, which we are always happy to discover and auction.
