Emma Kunz: a major work by the researcher and healer from Brittnau

Emma Kunz (1892-1963) continues to fascinate to this day. She worked as a researcher and naturopath and was drawn to invisible forces. Her most important tool was the pendulum — she used it for medical and artistic purposes. In 1941 she found a rock in Würenlos to which she attributed healing powers. She named it AION A; among other things, it is said to have cured polio. At the site of the find she established her stone works; today the Emma Kunz Zentrum stands there.

An artist against her will

Emma Kunz never saw herself as an artist. Nevertheless, her drawings attracted interest early on: they were first shown publicly in 1973 at the Aargauer Kunsthaus under the title «Der Fall Emma Kunz» (The Case of Emma Kunz), and further exhibitions followed in Düsseldorf and Paris. Kunz was born in Brittnau, a village neighbouring Zofingen — which made the sale of a major work a particularly natural fit for our house.

Work No. 092

The drawing on offer, executed in coloured pencil on graph paper, bears the unmistakable hand of Emma Kunz. At 110 by 105 centimetres it is one of her larger works and served as the cover image of her self-published 1953 book «Das Wunder schöpfender Offenbarung» (The Miracle of Creative Revelation).

At the Autumn Auction 2021 Work No. 092 achieved a hammer price of CHF 75,000 — one of the top results of the auction.
